Art is Life

I am preparing a new website that will be dedicated to the importance of the visual arts in people's lives.I would like my friends to set the ball rolling by contributing to this website.

Mission
  • to bring the visual arts  back into people's hearts and minds
  • to raise the importance of the visual arts and to encourage people to think more about them, and to do so in a more questioning and creative way
  • to encourage society to place a higher value on the visual arts than it currently does
  • to provide opportunities for living artists to talk about their work.

How it will work
While the article will represent only your views (and certainly not mine) it will be composed by both of us - as I will act as your mentor and editor.  It will start with a series of interviews and exchanges, initially via this webpage and subsequently via email.  The article will be illustrated.  You remain in full control of the final piece.  I help only to maintain the consistency of the writing.

Parameters - or "editorial policy"
  1. The central focus must be on the visual plastic arts - by which I mean, of course, painting, drawing, sculpture, and anything directly akin to it, such as ceramics and even furniture.  (I think architecture is not directly included, but I am open to persuasion.)
  2. There is no philosophical bias.  Every opinion relating to the plastic arts is allowed.  The one caveat is that all discussion must be polite and no slang or anything like that should be included.  The website is for everyone's views, not mine.  (I express my views in my blog.)
  3. While the central focus is on plastic art, that does not mean that other forms of art may not be mentioned.  For example, if there is an analogy between a favourite work of art of yours and some music, then include it; likewise, I can imagine many connections between art and literature, and, of course, between art and philosophy.
  4. If you are yourself an artist, then illustrations of your own work and comments on your own pieces are desirable.  However, every article must include illustrations of the work of other artists, named or otherwise.
  5. Each article should include a photograph of yourself.  This is so that the visitors can see the person to whose views they are attending.
  6. No article is published without your express consent.  The article may be withdrawn at any time, and subject to the availability of my time, modified.

How to get started
Please answer some or all of the following questions using the contact form below.

1.    Who are your favourite artists and why?  What particular works of art inspire you?
2.    What does art mean in your life today?
3.    What do you see as the importance of art to society?
4.    What concerns about art do you have?
5.    What recent exhibitions have you been to, and how have these contributed to your thoughts and emotions?
6.    What techniques are important to art?
7.    As a practising artist yourself, what are you trying to achieve?
8.    What connections between the visual plastic arts and other forms of art do you perceive?
9.    Do you have any other points that you wish to make?
10.   Are there any Internet links, pages or websites that are important illustrations of your views?

Note: once you've sent me your answers to some or all of these questions, we will exchange email, and you can then send me photographs of works you have.  We will research together any illustrations.  If the space is not sufficient, write them onto a word document and just email me to say it is ready, or use the contact form below.
